Here's what actually happens during a full-service appointment, roughly in order:
- A warm bath using shampoo matched to your dog's coat and skin — an oatmeal or hypoallergenic formula for sensitive skin, a whitening shampoo for light-colored coats, or a deep-cleaning formula if your dog got into something outside
- A full brush-out and de-matting pass using the right tool for the coat (slicker brush, undercoat rake, or comb), worked through in sections so nothing gets missed — within reason, since heavily matted coats may need a shorter cut for comfort instead
- Low-heat, low-noise blow-drying by hand — never a cage dryer — with breaks for dogs who are sensitive to the sound or the sensation of warm air
- A haircut or breed-standard trim, styled to your preference, from a tidy breed-standard shape to a shorter summer cut
- Ear cleaning and hair removal from ear canals, which matters most for floppy-eared breeds prone to trapped moisture and infection
- Nail trim and paw pad tidy-up, including trimming hair that grows between the pads

How Long Does It Take

A short-coated dog in good condition — a Beagle or Boxer, say — is often done closer to the 60-minute end. Double-coated or curly-coated breeds (Golden Retrievers, Poodles, Goldendoodles) usually run longer because the brush-out and drying steps simply take more time on a thicker coat, and a coat with existing mats adds time on top of that.
Size matters too — a Great Dane takes longer to bathe and dry than a Yorkie, purely on volume — and so does temperament. A nervous or wiggly dog may need a few extra breaks built in, which we're always happy to do rather than rush. If you're booking more than one dog in the same visit, plan on the full duration for each dog groomed back-to-back.
How Often Should You Book a Full Groom
Most dogs do well on a 4-to-8-week schedule, though the right interval depends heavily on coat type. Short-haired breeds can often stretch to 8 weeks between full grooms with regular at-home brushing in between. Longer-haired, curly, or double-coated breeds usually look and feel best closer to every 4 to 6 weeks, since mats and tangles build up faster in that kind of coat.
A few signs it's time to book: the coat is starting to feel thick or slightly matted when you run your fingers through it, nails are clicking on the floor, there's a noticeable "doggy" smell even after a quick at-home rinse, or it's just been longer than 6–8 weeks since the last visit. If you're not sure where your dog falls, ask us at the appointment and we'll suggest a schedule based on their specific coat.
Full Grooming FAQs
Do you use cages or crate dryers in the van?
No. The van is set up for one dog at a time, and we never leave a dog to sit in a cage dryer unattended. Drying is done by hand with a groomer present the entire time.
How long does a full groom take?
Most dogs are done in 60–120 minutes depending on breed, coat condition, and how cooperative they are that day. Because we're only working with one dog at a time, we're never rushing to get to the next crate.
What if my dog is matted?
We'll always try to work out mats safely first. If a coat is matted tightly enough that de-matting would be painful or risk cutting the skin, we'll recommend a shorter, more comfortable cut instead and explain why before doing anything.
Do I need to be home during the appointment?
You just need to be reachable — many clients run errands or work from home while we groom in the driveway. We'll text or call when your dog is ready.
What if my dog has sensitive skin or allergies?
Let us know when you book. We carry oatmeal and hypoallergenic shampoo options for dogs with sensitive or reactive skin, and we're happy to skip any product you'd rather avoid — just tell us what's worked or not worked in the past.
Can I request a specific length or style?
Absolutely. Bring a photo if you have one in mind, or just describe what you want — shorter for summer, a breed-standard shape, or simply a clean-up trim that keeps the length. We'll also tell you honestly if a style isn't realistic given your dog's current coat condition.
