We deliberately keep this shorter than an adult groom and build in breaks whenever a puppy needs them. Some puppies breeze through all the steps in one sitting; others need the visit split into a shorter session now and a follow-up a week or two later to finish. Neither is a problem — the goal is a puppy who leaves feeling okay about the experience, not a finished haircut on a fixed timeline.
How Often Should Puppies Be Groomed
For breeds that will need lifelong grooming, we generally recommend a visit every 4–6 weeks even before there's much coat to actually trim — the point early on is building familiarity with handling, tools, and the whole process, so it's routine by the time your dog needs real haircuts. It also gives us a chance to catch coat changes early, like the fluffier "puppy coat" starting to mat around the ears or armpits as the adult coat comes in underneath.
Once your puppy is past the first few visits and comfortable with the process, we'll typically shift them onto whatever regular schedule fits their breed and coat type, the same as we'd recommend for an adult dog.
